After a training break due to lat week’s waterlogged pitches, Chinnor turned up at High Wycombe fresh and ready to play.
The B team didn’t let the opposition’s quick fire try in the first minute put them off, and after some good scrumming from Ollie, Chris, Richard, Theo and Sam, George B took it on the run to score. Solid back work from Cameron, Callum, Luca and Harry S gave Andrew the chance for a second try. Fresh energy in the form of Jake, Tomas, Bryn and James gave second half play a boost, with another try each from George and Andrew. 3 out of the 4 tries were successfully converted and, although the names of the kickers are not recorded, spectators were treated to Adam (“Dead Eye”) Pipkin’s golden boot at least once. Final score – a well-deserved 26 – 15 victory.
At 15 minutes per half, the A team had to combine stamina and solid skills when confronted with the opposition’s unfeasibly large players. Predictably, Matthew S brought down the biggest one in the first couple of minutes – the crash as they hit the ground was felt in Handy Cross. Solid runs from Matthew D and Finn were followed by a combination try-saving tackle from Thomas S and Charlie P. After strong driving from Charlie M, Ben, Iestyn and Jack, Matthew S scored the first try followed closely by High Wycombe pushing it over to equalise. Nathaniel was on fire at the start of the second half, and his pitch-long run ended in Chinnor’s second try. Harry L and Iestyn impressed those watching with some sizzling runs, and Sam and Adam worked hard to keep the opposition from the try line. Thomas B kept his wits about him to recover a spilt ball, and the combination of quick reflexes and solid defense brought the match to a 10 – 5 win.
Well played to everyone, and so nice to see the sun for once! |
