England Deaf 7 - Wales Deaf 66
Wales beat England convincingly at Broadstreet RFC, Sunday February 3rd. The game was fast flowing and exciting to watch although the score line doesn't show the nature of the game. Wales admitted afterwards that they found it a very physical game and the toughest that they had so far in their internationals against England Deaf. The Welsh tries predominantly came from a very well drilled back line that exploited the gaps opened up by the forwards. The relatively new England squad played well for such a new squad and the forwards dominated the rucks and mauls. However, a better fitness and greater experience for the Welsh squad meant that, as the game went on, more opportunities opened up for them. Whilst England struggled to put any meaningful attacks together, they defended extremely well, denying the Welsh many other tries that they may have had!
The three Chinnor players acquitted themselves well. Rob Hill kept the forwards moving with his indomitable spirit, whilst Matt Woodward played well for his first full game since his ankle injury last May. Tony Wilkinson made his debut, coming off the bench in the second half to help stem the Welsh attacks and, battered and bruised afterwards, said that he thoroughly enjoyed his first game and is looking forward to the next one!
The next England Deaf International is against Scotland Deaf on March 9th, at Broadstreet RFC, just off the A46 going through Coventry. More details to follow.
